Offline Joined: May 2012 Posts: 1842 | I'm pondering whether to watch this series in English or Japanese. I hear the dub is really good, but i watched the movies in Japanese since they didn't use the same English VAs for both films. (Like when Mary Elisabeth McGlynn took over for Mimi Woods) Same thing happens with SAC: The compilation films (Laughing Man and Individual 11) are strangely dubbed by different people than the show, which would probably be distracting. Though i could techincally just skip those. The good thing about the Japanese version is that the VAs stay the same throughout, but it is pretty difficult to keep up with all the technobabble when you have to read subs. What's your opinion? |

I think I'd recommend going English the first time and then Japanese if you watch it again, or vice versa. Like I said, you don't lose out either way. 'Yes, I have been deprived of emotion. The guy asking the question has english dub actors on his favourites, it's not really at all helpful for you, someone who obviously hates all English dubs to advise him on this. I watched SAC subbed first, dubbed the second time, I ended up preferring watching it dubbed. And I wouldn't worry about the dub cast changing for the compilation movies since the movies themselves are entirely superfluous. |

My biggest gripe was during the Arise OVAs and the 2015 movie when they made a weird directorial choice by having Elizabeth Maxwell take over the voice work for Major Motoko Kusanagi while Mary Elizabeth McGlynn, who was the major for all of the Stand Alone Complex series and movie, voiced another character (Kurutsu) who had tons of scenes with the major and they didn't disguise her voice at all. It was as if the major was talking to herself in my mind. It was odd and I wanted the Kusanagi we spent the most time with, the one we know and love, to have her voice back! Looking back though, the tone of the Major was so different in the newer reboot/prequel that it kind of made sense to separate what was known with what is now new. Besides, they both did great voice work so it was a small gripe. |

The rest of the VA's are also very fitting and add a lot to the characters. Going Dub also helps focussing on the action that is really well animated in this series. |

At the same time, don't knock the dub just because it's secondary. Heck dubs help reach out to more people than the subs can alone (especially if said dub is close to the original source like GitS) |
