– Revit families are amazing libraries of fully functional (BIM) templates & 3D models of various objects ( doors, windows, stairs and so on ), that can be downloaded from external sources, for example from our website. Revit families are crucial part of Revit, as each 3D building model is made from hundreds or thousands of different Revit. This website has been closed, I got two other websites to download HQ Revit FamiliesWebsite #: #2: https://www.revitimport.com/. Are there any 2D plant elevations for Revit out there? I sketched an elevation of a house rather than modeling - took me an hour. I have spent the last 6 hours trying to add plants. Have tried converting dwgs - not working (wrong version), and found some in Revit v 2017 - I have 2016.
Landscape design is not exactly the first capability that comes to mind to most Revit users, but given the flexibility and wide adoption of the software, the use of Revit landscape design software is on the increase.
Whilst Autodesk Revit is undoubtedly a superb programme for most architectural and engineering projects which use BIM, out of the box it is not ready for serious landscape design work. For a start, Revit lacks the requisite systems for landscape design, such as planting families, planting libraries and site works.
Fortunately, Revit has an open API (application programming interface) which has allowed CS Design software to develop a very powerful and affordable Revit Landscape Design plugin called CS ArtisanRV that will simply delight those using Revit for landscape design schemes.
Where Revit is lacking as a landscape product, CS ArtisanRV steps in, as its expert features allow Revit to become a crucial tool for landscape architects.

Landscape Design software for Revit
The team over at CS Design Hub have been working hard to ensure that ArtisanRV raises the bar considerably for landscape design software for Revit. They have created a range of new features, which complement the existing capabilities of Revit to create a complete landscape package, which, through its comprehensive set of features and robust capabilities, is far more than merely a Revit landscape plugin.
Revit Site Works
CS ArtisanRV contains crucial features which address the absence of a Revit site works system. Object Properties allows the user to view and manage all of the objects within their present Revit model. There are two ways of doing this; either by displaying single object properties, or by browsing all objects. All that is needed is internet access, as the information is stored on the CSD web repository.
Another new feature which allows the user to manage their site works is Tag Options. This function allows users to write definitions for individual label templates, which are then displayed next to the objects as tags. They display a combination of free text and predefined parameters, in order to give the user information quickly when they go over their work.
Revit External Works
ArtisanRV also enables users to easily manage external works. An example of this can be seen with the Shadow Analysis tool, which allows users to view the percentage shadow coverage in external areas. This can be extremely helpful in hot climates, but is also important for the maintenance of external works generally.
Revit Landscape Families
CS ArtisanRV most certainly complements the software with plant families for Revit too, including hedges, plants and trees. Linear planting allows users to decide between planting single specimens or hedges, allowing them a degree of control over their work which could not be achieved with Revit alone.
The Revit trees and bushes Planting Parameters feature allows architects to systematically edit properties, including root, container size, centres, age and height/spread. Furthermore, standard planting age and condition conventions can be converted into a modelling age, which can enable visualisation and grow routines.
Revit Plant Library
ArtisanRV contains a superb integrated Revit Plant Library, which allows architects to keep track of all their planting activity. One of the crucial parts of this database is the Age by Planting by Year function.
This function means that planting can be carried out in four distinct ways: single planting (specimens), linear items (hedges and avenues), area planting (beds and woodland) and entire model. In order to make this complex feature simple to use, there is a Grow and Size Properties dialogue box, which displays all of the parameters necessary for plant sizing control.
After planting, the planting library allows users to stay informed. All planting placed in the model can be viewed in a table, which shows vital details, like Grow Years, Model Spread and Model Height. Grow Years gives the user complete foresight, as they can move a slider bar tens of years into the future, and see how this affects the other parameters.
Revit Planting Shrubs
A wide selection of Revit Planting Shrubs is also featured in the library. The NPS Shrubs Plant List is incorporated within the searchable CS Flora section, which presents the large variety available according to characteristic, habit and performance, alongside accompanying pictures.
Now that CS Artisan RV contains Revit Planting Families capabilities, all of these planting functions, including Revit 3D trees and hedges, are displayed with higher quality images. Using National Plant Specifications, the plants in your projects now look far more realistic, as well as having more flexibility to store data and age authentically.
Flexed planting now features distinct foliage blocks, which creates an impressive visual impact on the Topography. Species selection is reflected clearly in every plant, with the CSDhub web repository informing flower colour, and foliage features are controlled more precisely than ever before.
Revit 3D Trees and Hedges
Single plants, linear items and area planting have all been updated thanks to Parametric Planting Families, so it is fair to say that this is a serious upgrade to CS Artisan RV as a whole. Revit 3D trees can be specified according to the number of branches and lateral growth, giving the user an extremely high level of planning precision.
Artisan RV lets landscape architects create faultless soft works features for their designs. It allows users to easily create Revit hedges, which can be controlled using the Age Planting routines. Using Linear Planting, there is a choice between planting as a hedge, and planting as a single species, meaning the user has plenty of options when creating their soft works features.
Revit Fences
There are also great features for hard works issues, including Revit fences. The Create Fencing tool presents a wide choice for fence design. There is the opportunity to choose between a diverse set of fencing types, which can then be placed in the model and aligned with the topography.
Whilst it is clear that CS Artisan RV can combine with Autodesk Revit to form a complete landscape package, it has other features which are worth mentioning. The Topo to Floor utility means that users can convert the Topo surface to the Floor, which allows a layer build-up for quantity take-offs.
There is also an extremely useful digital help system, which can clarify any issues.
In keeping with Autodesk’s approach to BIM, CS Design have placed a big importance on collaboration for their product. Palette Builder is a cloud service, which is available from browsers, or directly from an ArtisanRV session, which allows team members to co-operate and share ideas.

Here are the verdicts of some of CS Artisan RV’s new users:
- “The growing of plants through time phases is a fantastic tool and will be invaluable in client and user group discussions.”
- “Bringing palettes already created in the CAD version is a game changer – so much time saved.”
- “Graphics for individual trees and shrubs are simple in 3D views – without adversely affecting speed! Symbols are well represented in plan view, too.”
- “When making blanket design changes, the plant schedules update quickly and painlessly – more time savings!”
With its latest updates, CS Artisan RV has truly become the best software for landscape design in Revit. Its comprehensive set of features mean that almost every consideration is taken into account; whether the landscape designer is interested in planting, site or external works, trees and hedges, or others.
All of the planting features are backed up by the state of the art Plant Library, which gives users more choice than ever before. CSD’s collaboration with the NPS has enabled this wide range, and has also allowed CS Artisan RV to improve its graphics to an unprecedented level, making it a joy to work with, as well as extremely lifelike.
All of this means that it is now possible to apply the field-leading BIM capabilities of Revit to landscape design, which will be of note for many in the industry.

What are Revit families?
Revit is Building Information Modelling (BIM), therefore each Revit building model is built from different parts, just like a real building would be. Real buildings are constructed from foundation upwards and would typically have walls various thicknesses and lengths, doors & windows various heights, color, type and so on. The same principle is used in Revit, which makes it an incredible and powerful tool to use.

The model – is the entire building in Revit as a whole.
Family categories – types of elements that a building can is made from: columns, floors, walls, doors, windows etc.
Families – different types of columns: for example, rectangular column, round column, rolled I-beam column.
Types in the family – the same looking rectangular column can be various sizes: 400×400, 500×500, etc.
Instance – there can be several 400×400 columns in one building. Each individual column is called a Instance.
